Product and Company Reviews

Members of the North Herts Vegetarians and Vegans team review some products of interest….

Venture Foods

Venture foods using the brand names of Organica and Geo organics, very kindly sent us chocolate samples, which we are giving out as “freebies” on our September stalls, and a selection of organic sauces and relishes…which our testers sampled with…well, relish!

A big thank you to Venture foods for their kind donations!

Here’s what our reviewers thought:

Sam tried the Geo-Organics Sweet Chilli Sauce with tomatoes and garlic:

“This sauce comes with a kick that was unexpected as the jar didn’t have HOT pasted on it; but the taste is very nice, for me to be used in moderation. What I really love about this product is that all the ingredients are really healthy and once placed in the fridge it lasts well.”

And Mexican BBQ Dip and Marinade:

“This was my favourite of the two products I taste tested and this one is mouth-wateringly beautiful! The mix of spices and tomatoes is just right! There is a Smokey hickory taste that is quite often missing in a BBQ product that is Vegan. This one will now have a permanent place on my shopping list!”

Ross sampled the Geo Organic Worcester sauce:

“Due to my love of Worcester sauce, on all my meals, I decided to taste test the Organic Worcester sauce (W.S.). On first appraisal the strong smell of vinegar hides the subtle tones of the tomatoes within, but when tasting it the tomatoes are unleashed onto your tongue. This is soon followed by a sweet yet strangely sour aftertaste.

Though not resembling a more traditional W.S. Geo’s manage to create a flavouring ingredient that heightens the taste of anyone’s cooking. To create the ‘famous brands’ flavour of W.S. it would need anchovies and a lot of inorganic chemicals. This is obviously not an option for a vegan/ organic recipe. What Geo’s have managed to achieve is a very good cooking sauce under the guise of being a Worcester sauce.”

And Geo’s Onion Relish:

“Geo’s onion relish can stand out proudly upon any shop shelf it chooses to. Its unassuming bottle and packaging makes it seem like any other regular relish which is a plus for an accidental purchase by those not normally fond of organic foods.

Being organic and not bulging with chemical flavour replacements/ enhancers this relish has a realistic ‘home made’ taste. With one small mouthful all the ingredients can be recognised and thoroughly enjoyed. It is a great addition to any sandwich and with one small finely chopped chilli it makes a mean salsa. Try this and discover what great relish should taste like.”

Andy had plenty to say about the agave syrup…

“Geo Organics Organic Sweetening Syrup is a light sweet syrup prepared chiefly from the blue agave (agave tequilana) succulent.plant, from which tequila is also produced. The blue agave occurs in Mexico and parts of south-west USA, as well as South America, and is related to the yucca plant – it is not, despite popular belief, a type of cactus. Geo Organics agave syrup (also known as agave nectar) is sourced from Mexican agave plants.

Geo Organics Organic Sweetening Syrup is described as an “all purpose sweetener” and, as such, is ideal as an alternative to other sweetening products, such as sugar, honey, treacle, and maple syrup. It is presented as a healthier option than other sweeteners by virtue of its very low Glycaemic Index (GI) value. A lower GI level means that carbohydrates break down into sugar in the bloodstream more slowly, reducing the effect of ‘sugar rush’, burning energy more slowly, and thereby maintaining more balanced blood sugar levels in the body.

Agave syrup naturally contains a high ratio of fructose to sucrose, unlike sugar products which are typically sucrose-heavy. Fructose is a slow-release carbohydrate which is absorbed more steadily into the bloodstream than sucrose, substantiating the claim that agave syrup is a healthy alternative to other sweetening products. Agave syrup, like maple syrup, also contains quantities of iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Typically, refined sugar has a GI value of 68, honey 55, maple syrup 54, and agave syrup 15. (The GI value of molasses and its derivatives, e.g. treacle, are, as yet, undetermined).

My sample of Geo Organics Organic Sweetening Syrup came in a clear glass bottle with a stated quantity of 320g. The syrup exhibits a pale golden hue, with the colour and transparency of lager beer. It has the consistency of clean engine oil, and is less viscous than honey but slightly thicker than maple syrup. In comparison with maple syrup, Geo Organics Organic Sweetening Syrup comprises approximately 10% more carbohydrates and calories, but contains 0% fat.

Geo Organics Organic Sweetening Syrup may be used in a variety of applications: as a sweetener in hot and cold beverages, on cereals and pancakes, as a sweetener on piquant fruits, as an addition to marinades and salad dressings, and as a sweetening agent in baking. It readily dissolves in cold liquids, rendering it more convenient than honey, maple syrup, and sugar.

The taste of the unadulterated syrup displays a clean, delicate sweetness to the tongue; less complex and grainy than honey, and less rich and immediate than maple syrup or molasses, but more natural and metabolically amiable than refined sugar. I would describe the flavour as uncomplicated and sincere (thankfully lacking that astringent aftertaste one normally associates with tequilana products); it exhibits subtle aromatic character with a well-orchestrated balance of fructose fruitiness, but lacking saccharin stridency; the impression is of an unpretentious yet well-defined sweet sensation.

In conclusion I can happily recommend Geo Organics Organic Sweetening Syrup as a healthy and good value-for-money alternative to traditional sweetening products; it avails itself as a valuable addition to the kitchen pantry.”

Finally Rachel tested the Geo Organic Thai Green Curry Paste:

“Firstly I must point out that I am not a regular eater of Thai-style green curry, and so cannot present myself as any kind of expert on the correct flavour! Having said that, we tried this product in a recipe based on the one printed on the jar label – adding coconut milk and a single green chilli (rather than the SIX recommended!).

The paste has a good flavour without being over-powering, and we enjoyed the curry immensely. It’s also good to know that all the ingredients are wholesome and organic. I will definitely buy this product again.”

Venture foods products are available at selected supermarkets and health food stores.
