THE-POOR2

One third of the world’s population do not have enough food to sustain themselves.
They are impoverished and hungry. A sobering thought then that the population is set to rise too.

Meat, dairy and egg consumption is one of the contributory problems.

“Hunger and malnutrition are the underlying cause of more than half of all child deaths, killing nearly 6 million children each year” - United Nations.

Hunger in the developing world started with our industrial revolution and the resulting colonization of countries that were completely stripped of their raw materials. Indigenous people were then forced to grow crops to sell the European invaders at a cheap price.

Those days are over but control remains with the West and developing countries are still forced to grow what the West wants. Their delicate economies are controlled by multi-national co-orporations and subject to a high level of corruption. What the West wants today is fodder crops (crops to feed food animals).

At the height of famine children are starving next to fields full of fodder crops destined for our livestock. Those children could be fed on those crops.

Most of Europe uses it’s land for animals or fodder crops and this still isn’t enough, animal feed is always imported from developing countries.

Land the size of 2 football pitches can grow meat to feed 2 people, maize to feed 10, grain to feed 24 or Soya to feed 61!

"In short, the poor are hungry and their hunger traps them in poverty."
—World Food Programme

Eating a meat based diet uses two and a quarter times more land than that necessary for a vegetarian diet and four and a half times more land than that required for a vegan diet.

Countries such as China are copying the American and European model for their meat industry. They are imitating a model that abuses not only animals and the environment but treats the poorest of the world’s people in a dehumanized way to obtain meat, dairy and eggs for profit.

Let us not forget it is not only world’s poorest people who are ‘being taken for ride’. Those who buy meat, dairy and eggs, all marketed as healthy, should know that more people than ever die in the West from conditions that can be linked to meat consumption; obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes and some cancers.
